Geography & Climate

Natchez is the westernmost city in Mississippi, standing some 200 feet above the Mississippi River - the highest promontory north of the Gulf of Mexico.

 

Adams county takes up 460 square miles of Southwestern Mississippi, 67% of which consists of commercial forest.

Climate

Natchez certainly has its seasons, but winter is generally very mild.  Our normal lows fall to around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, with an average of 21 days with lows below 32 degrees F.  Average winter highs are in the 50's.

 

Spring and fall are generally pleasant and mild, with average highs in the 70's.

 

Summer can be hot and humid with average highs in the 90's with 90% humidity.

 

Our weather patterns are heavily influenced by the Gulf of Mexico and prevailing southerly winds.

Government

Adams County Supervisors are elected from five districts. Natchez has a full-time elected Mayor, with Aldermen elected from six wards.

 

Taxes

All Mississippi residents and businesses pay state income tax. Income from federal, state and private retirement systems is exempt.

 

State Sales Tax:
  • Consumer goods and services 7%
  • Lodging (Natchez and Adams County) 10%
  • Dining (Natchez and Adams County) 8.5%

 

Property Tax City and County Millage rate:

$119.90 for every $1,000 of assessed value (10% of real value) less Homestead Exemption. Tax breaks for homeowners over 65.
